Maybe unrelated- I was a loan officer that did VA loans. Many Vietnam veterans had difficulty accessing their records due to “National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) Fire of 1973” I had vets that had deployment photos and could not access their benefits.

About 40 years ago I was at an auction in Oakland CA with a friend who bought a box full of Civil War letters. He gave a few to me because I thought they were fascinating. The old, yellowed paper these letters were written on (which doubled as an envelope when folded up) had very beautiful handwriting done with feather quills and bottled ink. They were visually stunning. But what really blew my mind was how well “spoken” and educated the soldiers were. Each sentence was clearly well thought out, heartfelt and politely stated using the the King’s english. They were simply frontline soldiers writing “I miss you” letters to their parents, wives or girlfriends but it was a startling glimpse into an era before the dumbing down of America.

We’ve got a seven feet high by five feet wide early 1800’s mirror in our living room that came out of the ball room of a derelict mansion in Wales. Had it about 10 years and it looks enormous in our small cottage but we love it- certainly a mercury mirror and it behaves in the way described, light a few candles nearby and the effect is amazing. It sits on the floor and its original plaster frieze is a little damaged but still there, it takes two men to lift it. As a side note we have found a diary from visitors to the mansion in the 1830’s and so we have the names of a few folk who looked into it back then.

The oldest mirrors I own (100 -175 years) have sterling silver painted on the backs of the glass, and they are gorgeous. EDIT: FUN FACT Hold a lighter or a match to the glass and count the reflection of the flame. Each reflection represents a decade. That’s how you accurately age a mirror.
